Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter. - Proverbs 24:11
Four abortion facilities. Twenty children per day. 5,500 babies per year. 250,000 image bearers of God murdered in the womb since the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision. Forty-five years of chemically burning and dismembering the preborn. Oklahoma has failed to rescue a quarter million of its citizens taken away to death and failed to keep them from the slaughter. Innocent blood covers even our Christian, pro-life hands, and let us not forget that God hates the shedding of innocent blood (Proverbs 6:17).
Evangelical Christians recognize that abortion is the termination of life. Some may be so bold as to call abortion murder. To our preborn neighbors’ detriment, however, most of us don’t act like abortion is murder. Instead, Oklahoma’s evangelicals have historically supported causes and legislation that have not served to end abortion in our state.
Woe to those who decree iniquitous decrees, and the writers who keep writing oppression… - Isaiah 10:1
Although Oklahoma has earned the title of being “the most pro-life state in the nation,” what does that really mean? It means despite all of the pro-life legislative success, abortion still continues. True, mothers must wait seventy-two hours before going through with ending their child’s life; children must be less than twenty weeks gestation to qualify for homicide; mothers must receive an ultrasound and listen to their baby’s heartbeat before flatlining it; abortion practitioners can dismember limbs so long as they don’t sell them; and, only state-approved instruments may be used to execute the innocent. These abortion restrictions, however, are ultimately the minimum requirements to commit legalized murder in Oklahoma. The pro-life movement in our state hasn’t been successful in ending abortion, rather, it has been successful in regulating it. In light of all this, being “the most pro-life state” isn’t a badge of honor - it’s a condemnation. It’s time to trample that title underfoot and become the first abortion abolition state in America.
By and large on the matter of biblical justice for preborn children, the evangelical church has feared the Supreme Court of the United States instead of fearing God. We have been impotent and silent, sheathing our greatest weapon (Scripture) and failing to stand upon biblical principles. We have attempted to prune the branches of the abortion industry with multitudes of restrictions, instead of striking the axe to the root once and for all. Are you ready to pick up the axe?
What Oklahoma needs - no, what our voiceless preborn neighbors need - is for God’s people to rise up, unify in a single movement, and proclaim in a single voice - ENOUGH! We will no longer allow children to be murdered in Oklahoma! With all the past failures of so-called pro-life leaders in our state, whether politicians or lobbyists, we need executive action. We need a governor to do whatever it takes to stop the killing, even if that means ignoring federal tyranny altogether (state sovereignty). Oklahomans need to recognize, once again, the Supreme Court cannot make law, and more importantly, we need to recognize we are responsible before God to disregard unjust laws and rulings.
Jesus said the second greatest commandment is to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31). What does loving your innocent neighbor look like when they are facing unjust execution during a real holocaust? The prophet Isaiah has the answer:
Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes; cease to do evil, learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause.
The only faithful way to seek justice and correct oppression during a holocaust is to seek its immediate end. That is what it means to abolish, or end, legalized abortion. This requires God’s people to repent from our former way of compromise to demand true justice now. It calls for godly sorrow to compel us to “open [our mouths] for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute” (Proverbs 31:8). It will require courage, it will require resolve, and it will require affliction, but this is what God requires of us in seeking a proper, biblical government that executes justice (Romans 13:4).
Evangelicals in Oklahoma have a providential opportunity to not only establish justice in our state, but to be the catalyst that ignites national repentance across the United States of America. How will you respond to the call?
He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. - Micah 6:8
Things to Consider
- Think about ways you have sought to fight against abortion in the past. How might they have contributed to ending abortion in Oklahoma?
- What pro-life politicians have you supported in the past? What promises did they make to you as a pro-life voter, but failed to keep? Did any of these politicians succeed in outlawing abortion in Oklahoma?
- What politicians are currently running on a pro-life platform? What are they promising you now? How do you think they view the idea of abortion abolition?
- Has this discussion changed your thinking on abortion and how Christians should respond? Why or why not?
