Talking Points

Tips for lobbying legislators

Initiating a meeting:

  • Go to your Senator or Representative's office. If you don't know who they are or where their office is, scroll down to the red "Find Your Legislators" button on this page.
  • Go inside and introduce yourself to the legislative assistant.
  • Ask if the Senator/Representative is available. They may be available right then, or the aide may schedule a meeting for you and the legislator later that day or another day soon. Make sure you get a meeting scheduled.

Talking points to emphasize in conversations with legislators and aides:

  • Abortion is alive and well in Oklahoma. A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that self-managed abortion has tripled in Oklahoma following the overturn of Roe.
  • God commands legislators to establish justice. Our current abortion laws do not establish justice. They provide slaps on the wrist for murdering. They treat preborn children as less than fully human. They have simply resulted in pill abortions rather than abortion mill abortions.
  • Ask them to coauthor SB402, the Prenatal Equal Protection Act. It is a bill that simply would make preborn children equal under Oklahoma State law. This equal protection is a mandate of scripture (Deuteronomy 1:16-17, Deuteronomy 16:18-20, Leviticus 19:15, Proverbs 18:5, Exodus 23:2-3) and the 14th amendment of the U.S. Constitution (No state shall...deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws").
  • Ask them to oppose SB834 (by Sen. Julie Daniels) and HB1656 (by Rep. Marcus McEntire) which would add exceptions into Oklahoma law which would allow for the murder of preborn children conceived in rape and incest.

Answering Common Objections:

“We've already abolished abortion in Oklahoma.”

  • A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association -- entitled "Requests for Self-managed Medication Abortion Provided Using Online Telemedicine in 30 US States Before and After the Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization Decision" --
found that self-managed abortion has tripled in Oklahoma following the overturn of Roe.
  • Oklahomans are blogging about ordering abortion pills to their door, like in the PopSugar article from November 1st entitled, "I Had to Self-Manage My Abortion in a State Where It's Banned."
  • We've gotten rid of the abortion mills. Now we have to abolish the abortion pills.

“We shouldn't criminalize women.”

  • SB402 criminalizes conduct. It does not criminalize women. The act of murdering one's own child should be a crime, no matter who is performing the abortion.
  • To give women blanket immunity in the murder of their preborn child is to say that women have a right to abortion.

"[Fill in the blank] doesn't support this bill so there's no use."

    • Legislators will often try to wriggle out of their obligation to support an abolition bill by trying to pin the blame on somebody else. For example: "There's no point in me coauthoring this bill because the Pro Tem doesn't support it," or "the governor won't sign it" or "the chairman won't hear it." These are just excuses. Tell them that they are not responsible before God for what other politicians do, but they are responsible to do the right thing.
